As some of you will already know I love keeping a nature journal and taking note of the new additions each season brings to my locality. In May here are some of the things you can expect to see in the UK & Ireland:

-Bluebells carpet wooded and shaded wild areas, giving a beautiful show of colour.

-Cow parsley begins to flower, looking particularly romantic standing tall and delicate in our meadows and the edges of roads and lanes.

-Dandelions begin to rapidly set seed with their beautiful round seed heads.

-Birds such as swifts ,swallows and house martins return for the summer.

-Dragonflies and damselflies can be seen this month around rivers and ponds.

-the dawn chorus reaches it peak this month as male birds try to find their mates and defend their territory.

-Most trees are now in leaf, the young leaves start out a gentle lime colour and deepen over summer. Ash will be the last tree to unfurl its leaves.
