What is Slow Living?
Slow Living is having a bit of a moment. I notice the phrase popping up more and more on my daily Instagram binge, our local coffee shop is part of the slow food network (as are we!) and consumers are looking for more ethical and sustainable choices. It seems to me that slow living is the perfect antidote to the consumeristic, fast-paced and hectic world we’re living in today.
To live a slow life is a simple concept. It’s all about taking the time to experience life in a more conscious way. For example take a usually mundane task that we try to speed through…the washing up! Usually we do it fast and detachedly. Using the slow living mentality we could wash up with care and thought. Cleaning plates that we purchased from our local ceramist. We could be present in the moment and enjoy the experience. It’s not necessarily doing it slower but doing it at the right speed.
There is an acronym too that’s worth noting; Sustainable Local Organic Whole.
The Slow Living Movement
The slow living movement stemmed from Carlo Petrini’s protest against fast food chains opening in Rome in the eighties. He became the founder of the International Slow Food Movement. Now there are many different aspects to slow, from fashion to marketing!
